Interesting Things to do With Google Earth

About

The Google Earth Library contains content that I’ve created for Google Earth and some of the more interesting content that others have created for Google Earth.  Much of the content you will find here contains very large data sets that push the limits of what Google Earth can do.  Many contain several gigabytes of data.

Some of the additional features I’ve included are:

  • Categories - Each post has various categories assigned to it. The Categories can be searched from the Category List.
  • Network Links - Every KML file that you download from my blog is simply a small file called a Network Link. These contain only a link to the actual KML file and very little data is actually loaded by Google Earth until you select the Network Link under My Places. The advantages of this are A) If the original file is updated, it will automatically update on your computer the next time you start Google Earth. B) Since only a very small file is stored in Google Earth, you won’t have to worry about delays when loading Google Earth if you save files from my blog to your Google Earth Places folder..
  • Google Earth BBS - If a post links back to a post on the Google Earth Community (BBS) then the post will include the original author’s name, a Network Link to the Google Earth BBS topic and a link to the KML file posted at the BBS. This will allow the content to automatically update if the original author makes any changes to the file at the BBS. So far author’s have been receptive to this approach. I’m not trying to take credit for the work done by others. But if you are an author that doesn’t like this, please let me know and I’ll be sure to remove any of your work.

In case it’s not obvious, I am not an employee of Google and this blog was not created by, or endorsed by Google. Feel free to contact me with any questions. Please report any files that don’t work, dead links, etc.
