Chile Earthquake Maps

February 27th, 2010 1 comment

On Saturday, February 27 at 6:34:14 UTC, a magnitude 8.8 earthquake occurred near Maule, Chile. News is just starting to come in so not sure how much damage there will be from this earthquake.

I will start working on a collection of map and earthquake data overlays for Google Earth.  I will continue to add new maps as I find them in the coming days.  If you know of any other good maps or data related to the Chile Earthquake that would be good to add this collection, please post a comment.

Just click on the button below to access all of the maps and data.  A list of the data is included in the table below, along with a link to the source.

Haiti Earthquake Maps and Data

January 12th, 2010 25 comments

On Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at 4:53 PM, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck near Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. Relief agencies and scientific agencies from all over the world have been compiling maps and other data to aid in relief efforts. Over the last several days I’ve been trying to help compile maps and other GIS data into KML format for Google Earth. I will try to continue to update this web page as more maps and data become available.

If you are simply looking to view maps and other data related to Haiti and the Earthquake, then you should use the Google Earth link below (download and install Google Earth first). This will add numerous map/data layers to Google Earth. Simply check the boxes next to the map/data layer that you want to view and it will become visible. Some of the layers may take a minute or two to load, depending on the speed of your internet connection.

Download With Google Earth

A detailed list of all the layers is included below. Every time you restart Google Earth, any new map/data layers will automatically be added to Google Earth on your computer.

If you are a GIS professional or relief worker, then you might find some additional useful information below, including offline version of the Google Earth KML files, GeoTIFFs of the source maps, and SHP files of the vector data. If you’re not a GIS Professional, then you should probably only use the Google Earth version of the maps/data from above.  Pretty much everything listed below is included with the Google Earth version above.

Layers marked with a ** are included as KML in a single zip file that can be downloaded and used offline with Google Earth – Offline KML zip (Version 2)

Update 1/16 – Here is a zip file with 19 layers of data from MINUSTAH in KMZ format for Google Earth.  Layers include hospitals, wells, rivers, roads, landmarks, etc, etc.  These are not yet included in the main KML link above (ran out of time today).  I’ll try to add later tonight.  In meantime, you can download the zip file and just load the KMZ files individually.

Update 1/16 – Here is a zip file with 50K topographic maps covering pretty much the entire country of Haiti.  The zip file is about 390 megabytes.  These are 8-bit GeoTIFFs.  I should have KMZs of them all tomorrow.

Crime Scenes & Serial Killers

June 5th, 2009 No comments

This data collection show the locations of notorious crime scenes, locations related to serial killers (where they lived, where they were captured, etc), and the locations of death row prisons throughout the United States. Each placemark contains a snippet of information about the location, including photographs of the scene or criminal. Some of the information dates back 200 years.

Quick word of caution. The content is a bit dark and may not be for everyone. But these are all very well publicized cases and are of historical significance to anyone interested in criminal studies.

Map the Fallen

May 24th, 2009 No comments

Map the Fallen is a project created by Sean at the Google Earth Outreach team. In short, this project displays information related to American and Coalition servicemen and women that have lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I’d also like to take a moment to say thanks to all our men and women in uniform. You are all in our prayers and I hope everyone comes home soon.

2007 Hurricane Katrina

December 17th, 2007 No comments

Update 11/2009

This archive of Hurricane Katrina data has been removed.  The aerial photographs of New Orleans shortly after the flooding can now be found using the historical imagery in Google Earth.  The MODIS satellite imagery of Katrina can still be found using the MODIS Satellite Gallery.  Much of the other data previously contained in this archive was hosted on other websites and is no longer available.

2007 California Wildfires

November 1st, 2007 No comments

The Southern California wildfires of October/November 2007 destroyed over 1,500 homes and over 500,000 acres.  More information on the fire can be found at Wikipedia October 2007 California Wildfires.

This is an archive of various GIS data sets that were created during, and shortly after the fire and have been converted to be viewable with Google Earth. The following data sets are included:

  • Daily MODIS Satellite imagery courtesy of MODIS Rapid Response Project at NASA/GSFC
  • Time animation based on GOES West Satellite imagery collected every 30 minutes during the first several days of the fires.
  • Data showing extent of fires from various sources
  • Placemarks linking to georeferenced photographs from several sources
